Civitella stands on the top of a hill where its majestic castle rises. Built in the Lombard period in the thirteenth century, the castle came under the possession of the Bishop of Arezzo, Guglielmino degli Ubertini, who subsequently restored it. The events that shook the village during the Second World War were horrible. In addition to the bombing that destroyed part of the fortress, the carnage carried out by the Nazis led to death of more than 200 civilians. In the center of the town there is an important museum of contemporary art; it is considered one of the most valuable in the province of Arezzo.

It is a journey to discover the town of Civitella. It was a disputed village between Arezzo and Florence during the Middle Ages, and yet it still retains traces of the old medieval walls as well as remnants of the Lombard Stronghold. The contemporary art gallery which houses works from great artists is truly noteworthy.
The history of Civitella was sadly tarnished by the massacre carried out by the Nazis on June 29, 1944. The tragic events have strongly scarred the village and its community. Today the Museum of Memory preserves testimonies, images and documents of this dramatic event.
The Sarapino, a modern historic event in Civitella from the 1950s, has been reborn thanks to the effort and passion of a group of young people who willingly revived this particular competition. And then there is the Ciliegiolo, among other historic vineyards, that originate in the Civitella countryside and end up in many glasses of wine across the world.
